Double gold for NSWIS swimmers

Two NSWIS athletes have come away from the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships as double world champions, with a number of others winning medals.

Paralympic gold medallist Maddison Elliott highlighted the medal haul for the NSWIS contingent, most notably in the sprint events.

Elliott’s gold medal haul began in women’s 100m freestyle S8 where she stopped the clock in a time of 1:05.85 to set a new personal best (PB) and Oceania record in the event, before adding gold in the women’s 50m freestyle S8 to cap off a remarkable meet.

The youngster’s gold medal victories were also complemented by silver in the women’s 400m freestyle S8, where she set a new PB by over four seconds, and a fourth place finish in the women’s 200m individual medley SM8.

Elliott was joined on the top of the medal dais by fellow NSWIS athlete and Paralympic gold medallist Matthew Levy, who was crowned world champion in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay and men’s 200m individual medley SM7.

In the individual medley Levy initially touched the wall having won silver only to be promoted to gold following a disqualification to the Ukrainian swimmer ahead of him.

Levy also placed fourth in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB7, 50m freestyle S7 and 50m butterfly S7.

Tim Antalfy and Taylor Corry were also in the medals during the course of the championships, with both athletes winning bronze in the men’s 100m butterfly S13 and women’s 200m freestyle S14, respectively, with Corry achieving a further two top-10 finishes during her campaign.

NSWIS swimmer Sean Russo had one of the busiest schedules of the championships, with the Paralympian notching top-10 finishes in five events. Russo finished fourth in the men’s 200m individual medley SM13, 100m butterfly S13 and 100m backstroke S6, while also placing fifth in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB13 and seventh in the men’s 50m freestyle S13.

London Paralympian Amanda Fowler rounded out the results for the NSWIS contingent, finishing sixth in the women’s 200m individual medley SM14 and seventh in the women’s 100m backstroke S14.
